The cause of much speculation as to just who built it and exactly how old it is, Skopje’s beautiful albeit abandoned Aqueduct lies in the middle of a field just a couple of kilometres northwest of the city on the northern edge of the Ilinden Barracks. Although some claim the structure is Roman, its orientation suggests it dates from a later period and that it’s either Byzantine or Ottoman in origin. Made of stone and brick and featuring 55 surviving arches, to get there take the E-65 towards Kosovo until you reach the village of Vizbegovo then take two right turns onto a dirt track and you’ll find it at the end of a narrow path on the left. The structure is clearly marked on Google Maps.
