Narodni (People's) Square [Narodni trg - Pjaca]

A trip west from the Peristyle along Krešimirova takes you through the Iron Gate and into Narodni trg, commonly referred to as Pjaca, a Croatian form of the Italian word piazza. In the fourteenth century, this square replaced the Peristyle as the city’s central meeting area and it remains so to this day. The square is overlooked by a Romanesque clock with the remains of a medieval sundial in front of a larger, older belfry and contains numerous shops and cafés. The north side of the square is taken up by the Town Hall (Gradska vijećnica), a fifteenth-century construction that hosts art or history exhibitions in the summer months.
