Day Trip: Menton

more than a year ago
Menton, a strikingly colourful town on the French Riviera and to the north of Nice, is one of the popular places where visitors to Nice want to see. Located right at the border of France and Italy, but on the French side, Menton presents visitors a different experience full of Italian culture.

The beauty of this town is seen from a distance as visitors are coming in, yachts and boats are parked on the port and the background of colourful buildings is spectacular. Mountains can also be seen at the back of the buildings, this set of three layers, water, houses, and mountains, presents a postcard picture opportunity.

Right after the French Riviera, there is the Liguria Coast in Italy, also known as Riviera of Flowers. In Menton, flowers are everywhere, there are so many gardens that people admire and enjoy. The most admired gardens are Jardin Botanique Exotique de Menton, Jardin Serre de la Madone, and Les Colombières Villa Gardens. The town is also known as the place where Lemons and Oranges are found, these citrus fruits are grown here by the farmers. The town’s symbol is a Lemon, actually. In February, every year, there is the Lemon Festival where people celebrate Lemons and Menton is known as the capital of Lemons.

Equally important are the beaches of Menton. There are both public and private beaches here which are children friendly. People also visit the Basilique Saint-Michel to see the bell tower from the 18th century, as well as La Chapelle des Pénitents-Blancs. For art lovers, the Musée Jean Cocteau is one of the best places to see unique art and this is where the work of the poet, Jean Cocteau, is exhibited.

By train, Menton is only 30 minutes away from Nice. Many tours use tour buses so it takes longer to get to Menton, but there are so many things and places to see, therefore, it is not a waste to take a tour bus. For Nice visitors who take a tour bus to Menton, it is important to mention that this is usually the last stop of the tour, that means visitors will not have a full day here but people are given enough time to stroll around the streets and enjoy activities on the promenade and beach.
