There are four main shopping streets in Cologne. For the standard clothing and fashion stores, Hohestrasse and Schildergasse serve as the busiest and the most comprehensive. Breite Strasse and Ehrenstrasse provide a more alternative style for a more individual and eclectic taste. Engelbertstrasse is the base of the small design stores, with refreshing approaches to fashion and style. Note that on Sundays nearly everything shuts down, with just a few shops at the station open. Although things are improving, many foreigners are surprised at the low level of credit cards acceptance in German shops; this is due to the cheaper (and superior) system of debit card payments that was in place earlier.
