Hamburg's main protestant church is the third to be built on this site. The current beautiful beast is the work of Johann Leonhard Prey and Ernst Georg Sonnindates and dates from 1786, with two major 20th-century reconstructions after a fire in 1906 and again from the inevitable bombing during WWII. Dedicated to the archangel Michael, whose bronze figure guards the entrance, the inside is fairly plain, with white and gold embellishments that give the interior an almost theatrical feel. The spire can be climbed and is worth the trip, and the church is also a popular concert venue, boasting its own internationally renowned choir.
