Overlooking Nelson Mandela Square piazza this slick sushi joint with its marble counters and art deco-inspired monochrome and brass interiors has raised the tone of what used to be a tired-looking cafe catering to tourists in search of non-threatening food like chicken and pasta.

The seafood and sushi-focused menu has plenty of choices and some innovative twists. For something filling try the sushi bowl of salmon, avocado, shitake, edamame and short-grain rice or opt for one of the well-executed signature sushi rolls (prices seems steep but the portions are generous). The clever fish and chips roll with crispy hake, peas and mini potato crisps is noteworthy and we loved their fancy take on the classic Philadelphia roll garnished with spring onions, seven spice, teriyaki and caviar. This is also one of the few places in Johannesburg where you can find ceviche on the menu.

While the exciting sushi menu and fresh fish dishes are the main attraction, there are also plenty of salad bowls, grilled meats, pan dishes such as prawn curry and a hard-to-choose from array of sides. If you are just here to grab a quick lunch, opt for a seat at the marble bar counter which envelops the sushi station, or for a more drawn out meal with wine the square-side tables are much in demand.
