If you're at the Tarnów train station, you might check out this small branch of the Tarnów District Museum, which is home to changing exhibits (most of which are quite worthwhile), plus the cherished fragments of the Transylvanian Panorama - a lost masterpiece painted on an epic scale depicting local hero Józef Bem's victory at the Battle of Sibiu during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. Displayed in Lwów, Budapest and then Warsaw, regrettably in 1928 the enormous panoramic canvas was cut into pieces, the exact number of which is unknown, and the majority of which have yet to be recovered. A point of pride for the local community and pet project of the Tarnów District Museum, the museum possesses 19 out of the 38 fragments which have been located; 23 are on display here, but note that they may go on loan in the summer. Worth a look, this gallery makes for an easy way to connect with local culture from your very first steps in town.
