Approximately 10km or so south of Kavadarci along a well signposted road that winds its way through the local vineyards and the small village of Vozarci, the 32km-long Lake Tikveš was created at the end of the 1960s and is the oldest and largest artificial lake in the country. Famed for the massive sheatfish—a local species of catfish—that prowl its waters, the lake is surrounded by a combination of steep cliffs and thick bushes with the occasional small beach and is far from being ready for hordes of tourists. Facilities are few and far between, although there’s one or two outstanding fish restaurants to be found nearby, and, during the summer at least, it’s possible to rent small boats for pleasure and/or fishing trips. As with most things in North Macedonia, official information is difficult to find, and the best way to find exactly what you’re looking for is through other channels. Speaking to the staff at the two museums in Kavadarci is a good place to start.
