No trip to Liepāja is complete without a trip to Karosta and its eerie abandoned prison. Now a museum, some of its employees and visitors are convinced that the spooky building is in fact haunted. Believers have told tales of terrifying encounters with restless spirits who grab at arms and legs, open and close doors and occasionally even materialise only to disappear seconds later. Although this seems like a clever ploy to attract tourists, the prison was also featured in an episode of the Sci-Fi Channel’s popular Ghost Hunters International series. The investigators similarly claimed to have been accosted by angry spectres and even to have heard voices from beyond the grave. In fact, they concluded that the building that has witnessed torture and executions under the Soviet and Nazi regimes is one of the most haunted places they have ever encountered. Unfortunately, the ‘scientists’ in question had little evidence to prove their claims apart from a few chilling voice recordings that will make your skin crawl. If you think it’s a load of bull, then why not arrange an overnight stay at the prison? Suddenly, not so tough now are you?
