Best Museums in Chisinau

more than a year ago
Museums are one of the best things to see in Chisinau and also a great opportunity to learn more about the city’s culture, history and art. From displays of warfare machineries to Moldavian art and the house of a famous poet, this city is full of unexpected gems just waiting to be discovered. If you’re not sure what museums are a must-see in the city, these are the ones we think should be on your itinerary.

National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History
Housed in a beautiful building built in an oriental style and located not too far from the city centre, this museum is the oldest in Moldova and definitely a must see. The permanent exhibitions will teach you more about the fauna, ethnographic background, culture and customs of Moldova, while the temporary one is all about traditional art. You can also enjoy a walk in the museum’s botanical garden while you’re here!

Muzeul National de Arheologie si Istorie a Moldovei
The beautiful architecture of this museum is one of the reasons you’ll want to visit in the first place. With an amazing façade on the outside and an interesting exhibition about the history of Moldova throughout the centuries inside, this is one of the top museums in the city. Make sure not to miss the diorama behind the entrance hall and the treasure room in the basement!

National Museum of Moldovan Art
With an unexpected collection of local art, this museum features pieces from the 19th and 20th century’s artists of Moldova, along with some exhibitions of contemporary artists. Paintings from foreign artists are featured as well, and the beautiful historical building that houses the museum is a work of art in itself. If you want to learn more about the local culture or you just love art, you should not miss this museum!

Muzeum Aleksandra Puszkina
If you want to see the house where the famous poet Alexander Pushkin stayed for three years while being in Chisinau, this museum is one of only two remaining Pushkin houses in the world. With a collection of pieces such as paintings, sculptures and editions of some of the works he wrote there, the museum will not disappoint those interested in literature and history. The information is in Romanian and Russian, but there’s some in English too.

Military Museum
An ode to the struggles of the Moldavian people, the Military Museum covers the most important pages of their history like the '92 Civil War, the 2nd World War and the Stalinist repression era. Other cool things you can't miss here are the Cernobil-related section, where you can take a look how the people viewed and understood the '89 tragedy, warfare machineries like tanks, RPGs and guns, and also propaganda art and wartime photos.
