An unlikely culinary star perhaps, the potatoes grown on the slopes of the mountains in the region around Berovo have taken on an almost mythical status in North Macedonia. Currently seeking protected cultural heritage status, there’s no denying the fact that the local potato—or kompir (компир)—is especially good, not least when combined with some magnificently grilled organic pork and lashings of local white cheese. Be sure you’re getting the real deal before you order when eating out in the area.
