Dating back some 4,000 years in its oldest sections and only discovered in 2001, the Bronze Age site of Kokino features the remains of various settlements spread out over a wide, rocky and desolate area over 1,00 metres above sea level. Amongst the miscellaneous clay pots and other typical artefacts discovered during archaeological explorations of the area are several markers on two stone platforms that were allegedly designed to measure the movements of the Sun and the Moon, thus making the site—for those who believe the story—one of the oldest observatories in the world. Now a protected historical monument, to reach the site, take the main road northeast out of Kumanovo for about 10 kilometres and turn right at the signpost onto a minor road that’s little more than a old track in places and drive carefully for another 20 minutes or so.
