The river area around the Letten hydro-electric power plant is one of the coolest places to have a swim in summer - or to just hang out with the city’s young and fancy crowd. Just behind the National Museum next to the main train station, the River Limmat flows into a canal feeding the power plant. On the left side of the canal (when you're looking downstream) are the swimming facilities, in a concrete structure by the water (access from Kornhausbrücke, close to Limmatplatz). Admission is free. There’s a changing room, lockers, a lifeguard at certain times (when the yellow flag is up) and sunbathing areas, one of which is women-only. At the Panama bar (www.panamabar.ch) you can have a snack and a drink overlooking the river (open in the evening as well). Just across the canal there is a beach volleyball court and a popular sunbathing area as well as the Primitivobar which serves drinks and food until midnight. If you walk down the path on the right-hand side of the river from the main station you’ll notice them soon enough. You can also swim down the canal – just jump in and float towards the swimming facilities. Remember: good swimmers only!
