Formerly Krokodyl restaurant this Turkish cheapie features some decent lamb kebabs, couscous and Turkish pizza served in a basic, no-frills environment. It’s not going to win gongs for excellence, but it is a step above the benchmark set by the Sphinx dudes. Of note, the restaurant is situated below Julian Tuwim’s former residence and the courtyard is a favoured prayer spot of visiting Jews.

Absolutely packed to the rafters after the pubs on Piotrkowska start closing for the evening, so don’t be surprised to find complete pandemonium as groups of tanked up lads leer at over-worked, grim-faced wait staff. The menu is your standard selection of burgers and kebabs, served with cabbage, beetroot and three sauces of varying quality. The plastic laminate menu is huge, though pretty much all the promised eastern dishes transpire to be endlessly tiring combinations of shredded meat, cabbage and carrots – every bit as appealing as it sounds. The Egyptian authenticity comes confirmed by the presence of pizza, plastic trees and a menu designed by some random called Tom Maltom. The locals love it however, and the Sphinx chain has spawned a host of copycat enterprises along Piotrkowska. On the plus side it’s cheap, simple and hits your calorie count in one strategic swoop – if you’re here on a lad weekend then what more could you want?
