Košice is a wine-obsessed city, although the ubiquity of beer might not make this immediately obvious. But dig deeper and you’ll find little trails of red and white, of beautiful people drinking the beautiful drink in a beautiful environment. The Slovak Tokaj might be one of the smallest wine regions in the world, but quality really does reign over quantity here. These are the best places to drink wine in Košice.
Found just a (strong) stone’s throw from Jakab Palace, Enoteca Centro is an Italian restaurant and winery that brings those famous two ingredients together to create something truly delightful. There is romance here, although that is to be expected from an Italian restaurant specialising in wine, right?
Wine and history go together like magnets and steel, so of course we’re going to jump at recommending Villa Cassa. The oldest wine shop in the city and undoubtedly one of its best, the store is found in the centre of town and stocks a wide range of plonk from all over the globe. More importantly there is plenty of space to sit down and enjoy a few glasses of the good stuff.
Named after the famous travelling sculptor who made his name in Košice, Vinotéka Löffler sits on the city’s main boulevard and simply allows its fine collection of wine to do the rest. There is food too, a menu put together to compliment those domestic and international wines. We’ll have a rare steak and a glass of red, thank you very much.
If you’re strolling through Hlavna, Barrique is likely to be the first vinoteka that catches your eye. It occupies some serious real estate in the heart of Košice and is absolutely worthy of that spot, with a host of great wines and plenty of beer to boot. This is another popular place to while away a summer’s day, with a glass of wine, a bottle of beer, or both, if you’re having one of those days.
Located just outside the centre of the city, Vínotéka Matyšák is one of the many stores in Slovakia stocking the famous Matyšák wine. The vineyard itself is absolutely worth a trip if you’re in Bratislava (it is located 20km from the capital in Pezinok) but visitors to Košice will have to make do with swinging by the store and trying a few tipples there. Worth it? Absolutely.
