Kamienica Gotyk

  ul. Mariacka 1, Gdańsk ,   Old Town          (+48) 58 301 85 67     more than a year ago
Situated on Gdańsk’s most picturesque street, Kamienica Gotyk is the oldest house in the city (1451) with an original Gothic portal featuring two religious stones either side of the entrance steps; if you want history, you’re in the right place. Ring the buzzer for entry and find yourself ushered up the steep stairs into tidy rooms that include modern bathrooms and sketches of Medieval Gdańsk. Church bells from the neighbouring St. Mary’s Basilica going dong in the background add to the experience while the basement holds a small shop selling artistic glassware. Kamienica Gotyk is also where the Anne Van Der Schilling, the lover of Nicholas Copernicus, is alleged to have lived. Whether this was her residence and whether Copernicus ever met her there is up for debate, however, archaeological evidence has proved that Anne definately stayed at this residence!

We stayed here for 4 nights, it was a really nice little hotel. Staff were very friendly, rooms nice and clean and a fab location. Has a pub next door which is worth a visit too.

Back in July I had made a reservation for two night at the Gotyk House because of its location, reasonable and good reviews. When I got there they said they only could give me a room for one night and that they had made reservations for me at another hotel across the Motlawa. Since location (especially walkability to the train depot) was very important to me, I spent part of my day and half visit to Gdansk finding a place to stay for my second night. Beyond that major disappoint, the room (supposedly a single, but had two single beds) on the entrance level was very nice, as was the breakfast. The breakfast was served in the small reception area.
