In other countries, the mere mumbling of swearwords like klootzakken, kankerlijers, losers and sukkels to a police officer would be sufficient for a night in a cell at at the very least (and perhaps a sound beating, too). However, in the Netherlands things are a bit different. A female student from Groningen was acquitted recently after she uttered these offensive words out loud to an officer of the law, during a wild night out. However, the highest legal body in the Netherlands, the Hoge Raad (the High Council), did not agree with the verdict given at a lower level of the justice system. They agreed that 'police officers should not be overly sensitive', but in the end they found the student guilty after all.
