Poland In Your Pocket

Poland In Your Pocket
Tell people you’re visiting Poland in the dark, chilly winter months and they will act like you’re a brave but somewhat silly 19th-century adventurer setting out for uncharted territory. Little do they know! A brisk chill is no reason to miss out on all Poland has to offer, and we think a dusting of the white stuff spruces up the capital city of Warsaw, which has plenty going on when the temperature dips. The noisy café patios have been traded for intimate bars (Warsaw has seen an explosion of new venues) and sites like the Copernicus Science Centre and Warsaw Uprising Museum don’t require advanced tickets; just show up and explore.

Krakow is similarly charming in the winter months – though we’re at a loss for what could ever diminish the city’s famed Market Square. It’s a great time to saunter through Kazimierz, the city’s former Jewish quarter that has been revitalised and boasts some of the trendiest nightlife in Krakow. Wrocław, which also has a colourful square, is a great launching point for visitors interested in the story that Hollywood portrayed in The Great Escape – nearby in Żagań is where it actually happened, and we give you all the details on how to see the related sites.

The rickshaws that navigate Lodz’s Piotrkowska street are a speedy way for chilly visitors to travel between the city’s major sites like the Museum of Cinematography and the monstrous Manufactura shopping centre (you’re just doing all that shopping to keep warm, right?). Poznan is one of our favourite places for seeing some of Poland’s most impressive cathedrals, which can be done in any season; the city’s Ostrow Tumski (‘cathedral island’) is home to the historical Cathedral of Poznan, while outside the city in Gniezno is the not-to-be-missed Gniezno Cathedral, regarded as the spiritual home of Poland’s former monarchy.

The winter months give the tri-cities of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot a chance to recover from the endless summer crowds that clog the historic thoroughfares of Długa and Monte Cassino, so happily swing your arms without hitting a fellow tourist, then make your way to unique sites like the Roads to Freedom museum in Gdansk (yes, this is the home of Solidarity) and the huge aquarium in Gdynia. Katowice, in the heart of Silesa, has been busy building a name for itself as the place to see live music – and is there any better way to get your icy blood pumping than swaying to popular acts like Fleet Foxes and Stephen Malkmus in this up-and-coming industrial city? Of course if you want to do as the Poles do in winter then head to Zakopane, the country’s skiing headquarters in the Tatra mountains. Everyone from first-time snow bunnies to semi-pro boarders will be impressed with the runs that can be spotted from nearly every resort in town.
