Burgas or Bourgas?

Burgas or Bourgas?

Burgas. Or is it Bourgas? IYP has checked numerous sources within Bulgaria with the final result being that the official transliteration to latin should be Burgas.

The pronounciation is not the American national dish, 'Burgers' as many English seem to take pride in saying, but 'Bore-gas'.

However what's in a name? Its more important what's, in our case, in the city, and this is what this guide is about, firstly to introduce Burgas to you and secondly to be a valuable reference guide for navigating the town.

With land marks like the salt lakes and Bulgarias largest harbour, and being more a business centre then a tourist destination, Burgas has enough distractions to keep all types of visitors out of trouble. It also works as a perfect base to branch out and explore the central and Southern sections of the Black Sea Coast.

During the bustling summer months it hosts many festivals, amongst these are: Burgas and the Sea, Beer Fest and the Festival of the Bulgarian rock music “Rock Explosion”. In case you prefer the tranquillity of flowers visit the city in May and September for the international flower exhibition “Flora Burgas”. If you suffer from hayfever stick to the festivals.

Do not limit yourself to only the main pedestrian shopping area - venture out through the historic Sea Garden and find one of the many hidden restaurants in the winding back streets.

For this guide we not only pre-tramped the city of Burgas for you, but included the historic towns of Nessebar and Sozopol and the not so historic resort of Sunny Beach (Slunchev Bryag in Bulgarian).

Browse through this guide where we present you a selection of restaurants, bars and other venues worthy of your patronage. In case we missed a destination worth mentioning, please inform us. Contact us at bulgaria@inyourpocket.com.

No matter what your reason for visiting may be - business or pleasure - Burgas is definitely a must see whilst celebrating your holidays in one of the nearby coastal resorts or a good place to be doing business during the summer.

Keep the hard copy of the magazine handy at all times. It will help you to find your way, and who knows, you may make new friends from the lost travellers that you assist with the useful information that you hold In Your Pocket.

Enjoy your visit to Burgas, hopefully you will comeback.
