Donald Dewar became First Minister after Scottish devolution in June 1999, but died suddenly 16 months later from a brain haemorrhage, at the age of 63. His 9ft bronze statue overlooks Buchanan Street, one of city’s finest thoroughfares, and stands on the steps of the Royal Concert Hall. A befitting location for the ‘father of the nation’ who dearly loved his home city and the arts. The memorial is there to remind us not just of the man who made devolution and the Scottish Parliament a reality, but to reflect on his own values of decency, fairness and social justice.
