Built between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, Gradačac Castle is another mighty cannon in the armoury of fortresses in this part of the world. The castle’s watchtower is immediately noticeable, itself built in 1824 by Husein Gradaščević as the great Dragon attempted to secure his land. It was here that he rallied the people against Ottoman occupation, leading to one glorious year of Bosnian autonomy. The historic importance of Gradačac Castle is clear for all to see. It also happens to have a rather charming restaurant in the roof and plenty of interesting art on the walls on the various floors, for the hungry and the aesthetically motivated.
