Many towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina trace their history back centuries, and while Banovići can do the same it wouldn’t be unfair to focus primarily on more modern developments. The town became known in the second half of the 20th century for its industrial riches, namely its brown coal, lignite that became famous all across Europe. That industrial history is visible around the town today, but there is more to this than meets the eye.
Nature, for a start. The magical Konjuh mountain peak is nearby, a buffet of beautiful nature that offers hunting, relaxation, recreation or just good old fashioned looking at the beauty. There are plenty of beasts waiting in those forests too, from ferocious (in the most adorable way) bears to friendly (but not too friendly) squirrels.
But the industry dominates today. The famous Ćiro train is one of the town’s most famous attractions, a monumental example of human engineering and the power of planning. Check out the train, head to nature. The best of both worlds, without a shadow of doubt.
