Welcome to the land of Festivals!
Ejekt, Synch, Rockwave, European Music Day and of course the Athens and Epidaurus Festival (pg 22-24), to name but a few, will all take place during the next couple of months and one can only wonder if this extraordinary supply of music and arts can be consumed in such a short time.
The answer is yes, as the Greek summer is already here and the gloomy mood of a difficult winter gives its place to more optimistic thoughts.
The street tables are already buzzing almost around the clock and Athenians get into their summer mode, which simply means less work and more fun.
The beaches down the ‘Athenian Riviera’ are packed on a daily basis (pg 19), open air cinemas - this very Athenian institution - are again open for business (pg 62) and a new glamorous resident is finally in place:
The New Acropolis Museum (pg 20) is opening its doors with a massive PR jamboree that will last for a whole week and will no doubt give the city and its residents a much needed pride and confidence boost (...at a cost of three million euros. But so be it - culture is the most important thing this country has to offer to the rest of the world).
The New Museum will no doubt attract more visitors to the capital, but as it happens, many of them will continue their holidays to the Greek islands.
In our brief guide (pg 16-18) we present ten of the most popular island destinations for the less experienced of you, followed by an equivalent list of islands less known and visited in our next issue.
