The Braamfontein branch (opened May 2019) is the third and largest in Joburg (the other two branches are at The Marc in Sandton and at Rosebank Link) with plenty of eat-in space on a wide balcony that looks out onto the street.
If you are unfamiliar with the Food Lover's Eatery experience, be prepared to be mentally overwhelmed by the abundance of choice. There's a dizzying array of takeaway options to choose from which, combined with the dance music pumping through the speakers, moody neon lighting and the lunchtime rush, can feel both exciting and bewildering.
Freshly-made takeaway counter options include the 'Bubs Fish & Chips' counter, the pizza bar, the food truck-styled 'Food Junction' where you can pick up your freshly grilled chicken or a burger, and exclusive to the Braamfontein branch, 'Pap-arazzi', a hot food station specialising in fresh pap served with an array of stews and spicy boerwors. Among other favourites are the very on-trend build-your-own poké bowl counter, the 'Fresh Society' made-to-order fruit smoothie counter, the enticing bakery filled with super sweet things including the Divine Doughnuts, a branch of Seattle Coffee and a sit-down sushi counter where freshly-made rolls zip past you on a conveyor belt.
If you'd rather mix and match your lunch there's also a build-your-own salad bar and a self-service hot food counter (priced at R125 per kilo) where you can pile up a takeaway box with everything from biryani and Chinese chicken, to beef lasagne and vegetable stir fry. And if even that still isn't quick enough for you check out the 'On the Run' shelves near the tills for ready-to-go sandwiches, wraps, salad bowls and snacks.
Serving up so many different options at extremely competitive fast-food prices means Food Lover's Eatery does not necessarily excel in every department. Some of the self-service hot meals could get some extra salt for example and if you like things to be really hot and spicy the filling burritos will probably leave you wishing there was a lot more heat. On the other hand if you are looking for a cheap and filling box of fish and chips, a healthy fruit salad to munch on the go or a great baguette that will keep you feeling full into the evening, this is the place. The fact that there are also daily half-price and two-for-one specials provides even more reason to keep walking in. Student fast food will never be the same again!
