Marking South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, the Freedom Day public holiday every 27 April celebrates South Africa's successful fight for freedom and democracy. This year's Freedom Day falls on a Saturday and signifies 30 years of democracy.

AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCES 

Thu, Apr 25 – Learn more about South Africa's journey to democratic freedom and Soweto’s immense contributions with Edmund Ndabazethongo Tsawe, environmental activist and traditional healer, for an evening of Soweto storytelling at Lebo's Soweto Backpackers. Before the storytelling session, you can enjoy a sunset bicycle ride at 17:00 and a potjiekos dinner at 18:00.

Sat, Apr 27 – Commemorate Freedom Day by learning more about South Africa's history and heritage with free tours of Constitution Hill. Book your free tours online. 

Sat, Apr 27 – Sun, Apr 28Be Kind To This Art hosts Nostalgia, an exhibition featuring a series of artworks delving into our place within the wider cultural landscape focusing on identity, memory, and narratives that connect us as humans at Melville's 27 Boxes.

Until Sun, May 5 – If you missed The Cry of Winnie Mandela during its original run, don't worry – the play has been extended. Catch the last of this moving story about love, strength, bravery, and women's unbeatable determination at the Market Theatre. No under 14s.

Sat, Apr 27 – Join the Modderfontein Freedom Day Farmers Market at The Modderfontein Bird & Sculpture Park. Enjoy delicious food, browse quality craft stalls, live music, and kids' entertainment.

Sat, Apr 27 – If you're busy on Freedom Day morning and afternoon, then Front Stoep Night Market with food stalls, music, and lots of games until 22:00 in Sandton, may be the place for you.

Sat, Apr 27 – Take a step to reflect with a Freedom Day hike and Breath Work at Farmhouse 58.
