No visit to Ljubljana Castle is complete without a journey to the top of the viewing tower. Standing exactly 400 metres above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the entire city, stretching all the way from the rolling hills of Dolenjska to the south to the rocky peaks of the Julian Alps in the north. The tower's history is almost as tumultuous as that of the castle itself, with the original structure, referred to as Piper's Tower, dating back to the mid-16th century, while the current tower was completed in 1848, and extended to its present height (with the addition of 1.2 metres) in 1982.
