Five kilometres south of town at the end of the track that leads past Kruševo’s paraglider launching spot, the Mečkin Kamen—Bear Stone—monument commemorates revolutionary hero Pitu Gili (1865-1903) and his soldiers’ defence against the Turkish army at this very spot during the August 1903 Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule and occupation. Depicting a revolutionary soldier throwing a bolder in an allusion to the story that when the fighters ran out of bullets they began throwing stones at the Turks, the event inspired the creation of the short-lived Kruševo Republic and is a story the locals carry in their blood from an early age. Drive as far as you can to the end of the track and find it hidden away in a group of trees.
