You can eat very well in these wild highlands: traditional dishes from Puka and around include fli, a thin-layered pastry with cream and baked in a saq pan, eggs with milk cream, tave dheu casseroles, mish i pjekur ne prush grilled meat, porridge or grits with meat, honey, wild mushrooms, dried fruits and marmalade. Drinkers have the choice between the excellent local Birra Puka craft beer which comes in several varieties, local wine, and the region’s famed juices, some made with wild forest berries. In restaurants and shops, don’t settle for anything less than the bubbly Mida or Qafë Mali mineral water, both bottled near Puka. The Shija e Veriut ‘taste of the north’ website at www.shijaeveriut.al is an excellent online guide to local agricultural and tourism brands in Vau i Dejës, Pukë and Fushë Arrëz. Browse here for producers of cheese, fruit, berries, herbs, wine, beer, spirits and crafts.
