This Gothic, red brick building just south of the Ossolineum can trace its history back to the early 13th century, when it existed as the royal chapel of Henry the Bearded, Duke of Silesia. In 1253 Henry's widow gifted the chapel to the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star (certainly a mouthful), a religious order from Bohemia, and it remained in their hands - undergoing numerous alterations - until the 18th century or so. The final months of WWII brought extensive damage to the church, and it stood abandoned and deteriorating until 1961, when restoration works finally began.
