Giddy up: How to embody the Year of the Horse in Joburg

11 Feb 2026
One of our favourite annual events is the Lunar New Year – or Chinese New Year. In 2026, we bid farewell to the Year of the Snake as the Year of the Horse comes galloping in from Tue, Feb 17, 2026 – Thu, Feb 5, 2027. In the Chinese zodiac, the horse is associated with energy, freedom, and forward movement. It calls for adventure, courage, and a go-getter attitude: a time to embrace new opportunities, take bold steps, and gallop toward your goals with confidence. Beyond the celebratory street festivals and community events that mark the start of this cycle, there are plenty of ways to embody the spirit of the horse in Joburg – all year long. We give you some ideas.

1. Grab life by the reins

Literally. Whether you're a lifelong rider or a first-timer, take the reins with horse-riding lessons at Ranger Stables, part of the REEA Centre at Delta Park. It’s one of the rare places in Joburg where nature, animals, and calm co-exist – a perfect reminder to slow down, breathe, and build trust, step by step. If you're a bit further south, the Soweto Equestrian Centre is another great spot to saddle up. Not ready to ride? Catch the pros in action at Turffontein Race Course or the Inanda Club, and soak in the thrill of the race from the sidelines.

2. Channel the horse's power

In the Chinese zodiac, the horse represents strength, momentum, and endurance – so why not honour that energy in real life? Lace up for a run with one of our favourite running clubs or join a cycling crew in the city. Not a runner or cyclist? Joburg’s best hiking trails, padel courts, and other unique sports options have got you covered. Whatever your style, you can charge into the New Year with action and intention.

3. Celebrate freedom

The horse isn’t just about power – it’s also a symbol of freedom, independence, and creativity. Celebrate that spirit by supporting local makers, designers, and artisans. Whether you’re wandering a neighbourhood market or exploring a small studio, start the year by investing in creativity close to home. In Joburg, it’s easy to get started: visit Victoria Yards, the Rosebank Sunday Market or the Joburg Artist Market.

4. Stay positive

Optimism and positivity are key traits of the horse. For that, keep an eye on projects that are shaping a brighter, greener, and more connected city. We've loved seeing the regenerative work of JoziMyJozi, particularly the launch of Jozi My Jozi walks, and are sure that 2026 will see more landmark projects undertaken. Similarly, residents in the areas around Lorentzville and Bertrams are taking matters into their own hands to rejuvenate the Jukskei River and create a sense of place with Makers Valley, while Braamfontein got a makeover with the Ameshoff Street Identity and Placemaking Project. The future is full of potential.

5. Explore Trojan horses in Joburg

We promise that these Trojan horses only offer good surprises! Joburg is full of hidden treasures, whether it's the artist studios scattered throughout the city, architectural gems and public art among the urban sprawl, or dive into the many flavours of the local cuisine with African Secrets or Yeoville Dinner Club. While you can explore these places on your own, join a guided tour for extra insider insights. The reasons to love this city are boundless: you only have to look. Let the horse’s spirit of curiosity guide you.

6. Burn bright

An aspect of the zodiac which can often get overlooked is Wuxing, or the Five Elements. Central to Chinese philosophy, each year not only gets assigned an animal but an element of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Fire is the element of 2026 – and there are a few different ways you can channel it. For the creatives, you can let fire mould your creations at Melville Mudroom and Kim Sacks Gallery and Ceramics Studio, while the Kwa Mai Mai Market's reputation as a down-to-earth spot to grab traditional South African street food, including shisanyama, is well earned. Foodies need look no further than And then there was fire and Che Argentine Grill for some of the best meals prepared over an open flame. Finally, you can experience a more wholesome warmth at Lebo's Soweto Backpackers, with a story gathered around the flickering orange campfire.

7. Play dress up

Of course, you need to look the part. Our top pick for Year of the Horse fashion is undoubtedly Waners American Trading Store in Brakpan where you'll authentic cowboy hats, boots, belts and more, among all manner of eclectic Americana. It's fierce, fabulous, and truly one-of-a-kind.
