Founded in 1886, it is the oldest existing cemetery in Belgrade. Its origins are linked to the relocation of the Old Cemetery, which occupied the site of the present Tašmajdan Park. Many important figures in Serbian history - scientists, artists, military leaders, statesmen - lie buried here. Quite a number of gravestones are fine works of art created by well-known sculptors. Part of the cemetery is occupied by French, Italian, Russian, Bulgarian and Austro-Hungarian military cemeteries from the WW1 and the English Military Cemetery from WW2.
