While we found it somewhat difficult to find on our first visit to Bratislava, the massive Slavín memorial is a must-see when in the city. Perched high above the hill, this gargantuan acts as the burial ground for thousands of Soviet soldiers whose lives were lost in the battle to liberate Bratislava during World War II. A 42 metre plinth is topped by a 12 metre statue of a soldier, with nearly 7,000 soldiers buried underneath. The views are predictably tremendous, but this is a truly solemn spot.
