Royal

This utterly charming hotel in an art nouveau turn-of-the-century building gives you an experience you could only have in Kraków, and that’s a statement many pricier hotels can’t make. Authentic in every way – from the reception area with a canopied desk, glass phone booth and wonderful secessionist staircase, to the spacious rooms fitted with pre-war furnishings, carpets and wallpapers – though the Royal’s facilities have been modernised (wi-fi, satellite TV, air conditioning on one floor), the style has stayed exactly as it was a hundred years ago. The unbeatable location directly faces Wawel Castle from the confines of Planty Park, and monitored parking in the centre, plus the ground floor bar/cafe and Pod Wawelem restaurant are just more reasons to recommend this romantic old world hotel. It’s where we might stay in Kraków if we didn’t already live here.

To say that this is a 3 star hotel is one of the biggest examples of why this systems of stars doesn't work. For three stars one might expect that the towels you get (there were two of us) would be the same size. Not one large bath towel and one small one along with the bath mats and hand towels. The Internet is also a big mystery to me I asked at the front desk about a password and they said that there isn't one. I went to my room got on the Internet only to realize that the whole neighborhood also knows that there is no password required to use the free internet at the hotel. I've been constantly getting a message saying that the number of users exceeds the allowed amount for the server. The bathroom in this hotel room baffles my imagination. Many say that this hotel represents a look back at Poland's past. The plumbing in the bathroom is a great example of this and should be put into a museum. The toilet... well let's just say stuff sits in a shallow bowl of sitting water before it is evacuated into the bowl lower down. It helps keep the bathroom smelling horrible and makes you have to flush at least twice for minimal use and several more for hardier uses. The shower pressure is fine however the drains can only take a dribble before they flood the bathroom. So even though a fine shower is possible it is not suggested. For the most part the rooms are fairly clean however everything seems kind of cheap like a discount sale of IKEA rejects. Even though it doesn't really affect my stay the halls are all scuffed up and the carpets seem a little dirty.Did I mention that there's no air conditioning?.. Except in the hall? If you don't mind losing a bit of your privacy you could always sleep with the door open. But don't worry about safety because the locks are sketchy at best (old fashioned keys) and the chain lock was broken. If I had paid for a 2 or 1 star I would have been OK but frankly 3 is way too kind.
