But for those at the Central Museum of Textiles in Łódź, the thing that comes to mind is the simple scarf. The checkered workers' scarf, to be specific—a symbol of working women who toiled in industrial plants around the world late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of them in the industry-heavy Łódź. The checkered scarf was warm, it was practical, it protected working women against cold and dust.
And it has becomes such a symbol of women workers in that time period that it is the inspiration for the museum's latest temporary exhibition, simply called "Checkered," which you can find in the recently renovated summer villa part of the museum.
The exhibition will feature works by artists and designers inspired by the checkered scarf and created especially for the occasion. The invited artists refer to the form and function of the workers’ scarf in a variety of ways. Scarves from the Museum’s collection will be presented, too.
The exhibition runs until early May.
