The thoroughfare on the other side of the Vanšu bridge is a treasure trove of 19th-century wooden architecture and although many of these old edifices could use some serious work, the beautiful buildings at the corner of Melnsila and Kalnciema iela have been lovingly restored and now host a bustling fair every Saturday from 10:00 - 16:00 that attracts visitors from around Riga. Although the theme changes from fair to fair, you can expect plenty of food and drink, Latvian crafts, fashion by local designers and a lively atmosphere. If you’re interested in the historic 19th-century architecture of the area you can also use an English audio guide (at the wine shop from Mon - Sat 10:00 - 22:00) to learn more about the neighbourhood’s most significant buildings. Take bus N°53 from the National Theatre to the Melnsila iela stop or tram N°1 from Grēcinieku iela to the Kalnciema iela stop.
