Polish Snacks & Shots

more than a year ago
A very Polish phenomenon that has swept the country in recent years is the 24-hour snack and shot bar. Known locally as 'Zakąski Przekąski' (literally 'Appetisers & Snacks'), or 'Polish Tapas' as it's been dubbed by some, these trendy, formulaic budget bars cash in on communist nostalgia and the appeal of low prices by offering a small selection of simple, local appetisers (typically served cold) for about 8zł each, with drinks typically fixed at 4zł. The menu reads like a list of correct answers to the Jeopardy question 'Foods that follow vodka' and typically includes śledz (pickled herring in oil), galaretka (pig trotters in jelly), kiełbasa (sausage), pierogi, pickles and tartare.

We’re now starting to see variations on the theme with some taking a more modern spin while some bars have reduced the size of the drink available for 4zl so that you’re not actually getting cheaper alcohol at all. Shop around and look for at least a 0.4ltr to make sure you’re getting the best deal. A great place to fortify yourself for the evening ahead or alternatively to round off an evening on the town with a nightcap and a snack.
