#FreshlyPlated Joburg restaurant news – December 2022

more than a year ago
In our monthly #FreshlyPlated restaurant news round-up, we share a sneak peek of the newest bars, cafés, trends, and eateries that Joburg diners should know about. This month it’s wine all the time with Joburg’s chic new wine bars, Just Teddy and Summa open sweet new stores, and kids come first at the Old Oak, plus lots more. Catch up on our November #FreshlyPlated blog here.

Bring on a sweet new year

Delicate pastries at Just Teddy Sandton

Just when we thought Joburg was slowing down, Just Teddy opens a new branch in Nelson Mandela Square. The fine patisserie and boulangerie delivers Dubai decadence with marble countertops, chandeliers, and gold trimmings. Along with their signature high tea experience, the new store features a champagne bar, semifreddo station, and waffle kiosk for a sweet fix on-the-go.

Summa Sundae Bar opened a new branch in Parkwood with Belgian waffles, cruffles (croissant waffles), and gourmet shakes. And if it’s too early for ice cream, they’ve introduced a breakfast menu with savoury waffles and bagels.

Cheers to the weekend

Fresh oysters at Acid Food & Wine Bar

Get in the festive mood at one of Joburg’s excellent new wine bars. Qbar by Quoin Rock, located in Oxford Parks, is a dedicated wine bar showcasing Cape Town-based Quoin Rock’s fine wines. On offer is a small wine selection including Quoin Rock’s highly-rated Black Series MCC. The menu features thoughtfully prepared small plates to accompany but not overshadow the wine. Read our full review on Qbar here

For a more casual wine tasting experience, pop in to Acid Food & Wine Bar in Parktown North. The chic new bar has a warm cozy atmosphere and circular bar counter enhancing the intimate setting. The carefully curated wine list (which changes regularly) features wines from marginalised producers and unusual varieties – all available by the glass. The food menu of bar snacks and small plates includes fresh oysters with green nam jim dressing and ultra creamy green pea and balnori goats cheese risotto.

Kids come first at The Old Oak

Crispy squid at The Old Oak

Hidden along the greens of the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club is a wonderful new child-friendly restaurant The Old Oak. For the kids, there’s a massive playground equipped with a climbing wall, dedicated colouring books and pencils, and a special kids menu. For us adults, there’s an excellent wine list and contemporary food menu including wagyu burgers and hand-stretched Neapolitan pizzas.

Glory x The Artivist pop up

The Artivist in Braamfontein

Glory, the elusive Asian eatery, is back with a brand new pop-up at The Artivist in Braamfontein. The pop-up runs Thursday – Saturday for dinner and is open for lunch on Saturdays. Choose between the full set menu or bar snacks that include Glory's signature fried chicken bao with miso butter, or ceviche tacos with whitefish and olive.

Christmas feasting

It’s not too late to make a booking for Christmas lunch. Radisson RED Rosebank is hosting a family table buffet for Christmas lunch including slow-cooked pulled beef rib, honey-glazed gammon, and whole dressed salmon. The buffet is R750 per person and you can make a booking via email. If you missed it last week, check out our comprehensive guide to festive feasting here

In other news…

Everyone is talking about Mamasamba, the new offering from the Proud Mary group, located across the way in The Zone @Rosebank.

Marble is opening at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town late 2023. The rooftop space, framed almost entirely by glass, will offer diners a view of Table Mountain, the waterfront harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Tang has opened a new restaurant at the V&A Waterfront with interiors by award-winning designer Tristan Du Plessis. They are now open for reservations.

Signature restaurant is also making their coastal debut early 2023 at Oceans Mall in Umhlanga, Durban.

KZN fine dining restaurant The Living Room at Summerhill Guest Estate took top honours at this year’s Eat Out Awards. They beat the Cape competition to win the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant of The Year for 2022.

Ryan Cole’s Salsify at the Roundhouse in Camps Bay achieved a three-star rating at the 2022 Eat Out Awards and received the title of ‘Best Restaurant in South Africa’ at the South African Luxe 100 Best Awards. We are huge fans.

Sadly, Voisin Bread & Wine is closing on 24 December. We’ll miss their freshly baked sourdough loaves but luckily we can still buy their curated wine selection online.
