What better way to start the weekend than with a long lazy brunch at a local cafe? Strong coffee, the fluffiest eggs, freshly squeezed juices and a mimosa or two make for a fine start to the day, especially when enjoyed on a sunny cafe terrace. Here's a look at some of our favourite places to enjoy brunch in Joburg.
Birdhaven's cute French-inspired courtyard cafe and restaurant Arbour Cafe has teamed up with winemakers L’Ormarins Cap Classique to present a bottomless mimosas brunch every weekend. Choose from their extensive brunch menu, featuring classics like French savoury galettes or homemade Brioche French Toast with strawberries and enjoy 90 minutes of bottomless mimosas for a set menu price. The bottomless bubbly brunch is available on Saturdays and Sundays and costs R295 per person. Booking is essential at firstname.lastname@example.org or call +27 10 753 2007.

Flames is the terrace restaurant at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. The reason to be here is to sit as close to the edge of the terrace as possible and to take in the awe-inspiring views. Flames has an all-day dining menu but the standout is the weekend brunch (served Sat and Sun from 11:00 until 15:00), a popular affair where bookings are essential. Brunch comes at a luxurious price but the offering matches up. Several courses of small dishes are brought to the table, starting with a cold platter for two which includes delicious sweet and savoury pastries, fruit, and salads as well as Mandela Bay oysters, accompanied by a great selection of freshly pressed juices. Reserve a table for brunch online at flamesrestaurant.co.za.

The Forum Kitchen at L’antico Giardino, is a weekends-only breakfast and lunch venue created by top events organisers The Forum Company, located at their beautifully restored Lanseria farm White Light. Around 30 minutes drive from Sandton, the ''ancient garden'' or L'antico Giardino spreads out under tall mature trees and into a lush garden that is filled with statues, fountains and flowers. The majority of the seating is outdoors and there's also a pretty indoor greenhouse-style dining room. As a special occasion venue for an al fresco baby shower or birthday party it's a winner. Everything is made with fresh produce sourced from nearby farms and producers and the menu is regularly updated to reflect the seasons. Booking is essential call +27 11 575 3888 or +27 63 691 8912, or book online here.

Morning Glory is the new sweetheart of Parkwood's Park Corner area and for good reason. This pastel pink coffee spot is home to world-class coffee and a delicious and innovative brunch menu, all served in an intimate and quirky space. Coined as an all-day easy-eating cafe, their cheeky menu offers everything from a hot cross bun ice cream sandwich, to peanut butter and jelly oats. We recommend their banana bread with espresso cream finished off with a macchiato. Morning Glory is also dog-friendly.

Naked Kitchen and Coffee Bar, Morningside
Naked Coffee is a trendy and popular brunch spot in Morningside Shopping Centre (there are also branches in Kramerville, Sandton City and Melrose Arch). With their neon signs, array of plants, and trendy tiled walls, it is hard not to fall in love with their Morningside space. Naked Coffee pride themselves on producing coffee that’s small batch and hand-roasted, and they offer an exceptional brunch menu too. The food here is excellent, always incredibly fresh and the ingredients used of the highest quality. For a light brunch pair a flat white with their famous banana bread, or a salmon bagel.

This is the second incarnation of the Eggs-Go-Bar that turned a Melville grimy corner into a sensation, and it's even more popular (if that's possible). Located at the Mint Hotel on Katherine Street in Sandton's business district, Pablo has a breezy space that offers outdoor seating looking onto a poolside. The famous shakshuka with Yemeni flatbread is still a winner, and Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern mezze and small plates, plus wood-fired pizza, make this a great brunch destination. For an extravagant brunch they also serve Veuve Clicquot Champagne by the glass or bottle.

One of Rosebank's most visually impressive venues, Proud Mary at the eye-catching voco Hotel The Bank is a 'modern-day eatery' with one of the sexiest bar counters in the neighbourhood, and an impressive drinks menu to match. For brunch choose from items from their extensive breakfast menu (available until 11:30) or from their enticing lunch menu of small plates and 'cafe plates'. If you're feeling extravagant order some oysters too. The terrace is prime people-watching territory and the facade opens onto the street, bringing in lots of air and light.

This busy cafe at 44 Stanley is surrounded by enticing design and fashion stores and its tables flow outdoors onto a covered veranda and into a picturesque courtyard – perfect for a relaxed weekend brunch. There's a good selection of salads, sandwiches, and wraps, and an excellent vegetarian chilli with nachos or pick something from the breakfast menu that presents a choice of 'healthy', 'sweet' and 'savoury' options. Fresh and healthy ingredients are top of the list and everything is free range.

We appreciate this vibey corner cafe on Melville's iconic 7th Street for a number of reasons; the good coffee, super friendly staff and their bright and airy courtyard in the back. From 11:00 daily Spilt Milk serves brunch and cocktails (or you can go alcohol-free with coffee and juices). The food is super filling, especially the gourmet bagels, and the classic brunch cocktails like the mimosas and the Bloody Mary are strong enough to wake up even the tiredest of eyes.

Those in the know credit this buzzing coffee shop with its hipster aesthetic for putting the suburb of Linden on the cool map. The food is freshly made cafe-style, simple and tasty and the coffee and tea selection is top rate. Every morning the doors open early for delicious breakfasts, made with care and attention, and on weekends you may well struggle to get a table. The Potato Rosti Breakfast with poached eggs and homemade hollandaise is a brunch favourite.
