Although Gdańsk's historic Stocznia (Shipyard) district flourished during the golden age of shipbuilding in the late 19th-century, today the area is best known as the birthplace of Solidarity - the social and political movement that exploded across PL out of the Shipyard strikes of 1980. Largely abandoned amidst declining industry, the shipyards are now being revitalised as an alternative centre of gastronomy, nightlife and entertainment, and are one of Gdańsk's most fascinating and offbeat areas to explore.
