Sopot In Your Pocket
Sopot’s reputation as Poland’s premier seaside resort is justly deserved.
A mulit-million euro investment to return Sopot to its halcyon days was officially opened in July 2009. Central to this development is the fourth incarnation of Sopot's Resort House. Read more about its history and future
here including info the spanking new
5-star Sheraton Sopot Hotel, Conference Centre & Spa who can boast the best conference facilities in the region.
A trip to the region would not be complete without a visit to Sopot, a place where human settlement dates back 2,500 years.
A small fishing village owned by the Cistercians in Oliwa existed here from the 13th century and in the 17th and 18th centuries, the baths and spas of this increasingly-fashionable health resort lured a select, affluent and aristocratic set as much for the vibrant social life
for the soothing waters.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Sopot, then part of the Prussian partition of Poland, became a playground for Europe’s ruling classes. Kaiser Wilhelm II had a summer home here, (now the Maryla hotel) and a separate villa for his guests (formerly the Magnolia hotel). Sopot became part of the Free City of Gdańsk under the Treaty of Versailles and the Grand Hotel (now the Sofitel Grand Sopot Hotel) formed part of a huge casino and spa complex as Sopot enjoyed a golden age between the wars.
Avoiding much of the destruction experienced by its neighbour Gdansk at the end of WWII, the city retained much of its pre-war charm and continued to be a place to see and be seen.
Famous primarily for hosting the Sopot festival during the years of communism, a music festival broadcast to all corners of the Soviet empire, Sopot continued to be the summer resort of choice for those who could afford to come here.
Today, Sopot is once again a hip and happening place, with its trendy bars, restaurants and shops scattered around the main drag, ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino. Reflecting its summertime popularity you’ll find a strong choice of hotels as well as a nightlife that is considered one of the best in the country.

Was there on Saturday evening and this place is the best pre-club bar I have seen in Sopot. Little grumbles aside (the uninviting door police, the lack of draught beer and the 10zl bottled Perroni) this place seems to be getting its act together. Th[...]
