Unique ways to see Johannesburg – Exploring the City Centre

08 May 2025
Johannesburg, known by locals as Joburg, is a Gold Rush city founded in 1886. "Town", as Joburgers often refer to the historic city centre, is defined by its street life. Busy pavements are filled with a multicultural mix of people while minibus taxis whizz through the streets, hawkers "hustle", cross-continental traders shop, and the uneven streets hum with an "Afropolitan" atmosphere. We round up key areas and some of our favourite attractions for you to explore and enjoy.

Braamfontein is the gateway to the city and home of Wits University campus, which includes an array of interesting museums. This student neighbourhood is also home to Play Braam, consisting of four blocks filled with attractions that include a rooftop basketball court, urban beach, coffee shop, pizza parlour, and on Saturdays, The Playground, a cool market-like space with regularly changing events. Dance the night away at Kitcheners or head to Untitled Basement on Reserve Street for some of the best music Joburg has to offer.

Across the Nelson Mandela BridgeNewtown is one of the city's cultural precincts (we don't recommend walking there as it crosses a busy taxi route) and home to the famous Market Theatre. Head to neighbouring Ferreirasdorp to see Chancellor House, which features the history of this famous building on panels and photos on the outside of the building, the impressive sculpture of Nelson Mandela  Shadow Boxing, and pedestrianised Main Street, along which you can explore the city’s mining history.

To the west of Newtown is the Indian heart of Joburg, Fordsburg. The City Centre spreads out from Gandhi Square, with the immediate surrounds filled with examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The Fashion District is where shoppers from across the continent come to buy clothing and fabrics. To the east lies Maboneng and the stadiums and sporting facilities of the Ellis Park Precinct. Beyond this is Victoria Yards with its artist studios and artisan workshops.

ART, BOOKS, AND COFFEE
August House is a must-see for art lovers. Photo: August House via Instagram.
Art runs through the veins of this city, constantly infusing Joburg’s creative riches. We think it’s the new gold: from artist studio spaces like August House and Bag Factory to the graffiti gallery, Grayscale, and the impressive Wits Art Museum (WAM). And it’s not only in these spaces – the streets are their own gallery. Take a graffiti tour of the city or any city tour, and you’ll be amazed by the number of public sculptures. From the giant Eland by Clive Van den Berg at the gateway to the city in Braamfontein to the steel origami Paper Pigeons in Ferreirasdorp by Gerhard and Maja Marx, and Marco Cianfanelli’s steel sculpture of Nelson Mandela as a Shadow Boxer.

Arts on Main in Maboneng is home to world-renowned artist William Kentridge’s Centre for the Less Good Idea, a collaborative performance space that showcases new programmes annually. Check their schedule. It’s also where you’ll find one of the city’s most impressive art printing studios, David Krut Projects. For the coolest city streetwear, check out Project Inflamed. Enjoy coffee at Home of the Bean before taking a walk through Jewel City to admire the impressive murals, and then visit the famous Collectors Treasury, a paradise for book lovers with more than one million titles.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE

Explore Joburg’s rich mining history along the pedestrianised Main Street Mining Walk, which runs for seven blocks from Gandhi Square to Ntemi Piliso St, where nearby you’ll find Chancellor House, the former law practice of Nelson Mandela. You’ll spot relics of the gold rush, such as mining headgear, stamp presses, and carts, and see the rich seam of former mining company headquarters. Take a detour to Sadie’s Bistro, and from Gandhi Square, make your way to the fascinating Ferreira’s Mine Stope at Standard Bank. The city’s legendary members’ club, Rand Club, founded by Joburg’s mining magnates, is a block off Gandhi Square. A glorious piece of heritage architecture, make sure to stop by and while you are at it, have a drink at Africa’s longest bar.

RUGBY AND A POST-MATCH MEAL
Make like a local and catch a game at Emirates Airlines Park Stadium. Photo: Supplied.
Rugby fans can do no better than booking to see a game at Emirates Airlines Park Stadium. Even if it’s not the season, you can visit the stadium’s museum and enjoy seeing its collection of Springbok memorabilia. No visit would be complete without a pre-match or post-match meal at The Troyeville, where their legendary Portuguese food will have you wanting to come back for more. Finish the meal with a tasty treat – a pasteis de nata from Casa das Natas on the ground floor. The rooftop here has a regular schedule of music events, too.

MAKER'S SPACES AND MARKET SHOPPING

Victoria Yards is a collection of artisan and artist spaces where making is the order of the day. A wonderland of studio spaces set amid lush gardens, you’ll find everything from beautiful African artefacts at Art of the Continent to handmade notebooks at Pulp Paperworks, and one of Joburg’s top denim labels, Tshepo, and more. This is a wonderful space to wander, or take a tour with an experienced on-site guide. On the first Sunday of each month, the space opens up to a city market with art and craft, food stalls and live music.

CITY ROOFTOPS
The City Sightseeing Bus is a great way to explore Joburg. Photo: City Sightseeing Bus.
See the city from its rooftop spaces. Hop on the City Sightseeing Bus from Rosebank to get a bird’s eye view. Take a tour with Dlala Nje or book for a sundowner visit to the 52nd floor of Ponte City. At Hallmark House Hotel, you’ll be treated to a jaw-dropping view of the city from their rooftop bar, or head to Elevate at Reef Hotel.

SATURDAYS IN BRAAM
Kick off your weekend at The Playground in Braamfontein. Photo: The Playground.
Saturdays are made for exploring Braamfontein. In four neat blocks along Juta and De Korte Streets, you’ll find the weekly rooftop market, The Playground. Make your way to the second floor and find a table on the open terrace from which to enjoy live DJ sets, street food, and drinks. Head to the elevator to explore the city’s sky-high basketball court, where you can book to shoot a few hoops. There’s also an amazing viewing deck to capture city views.

Across the street is pizza joint Little Kitcheners Pizzeria, and Kitcheners Bar, where you can stay until late if you feel like a boogie. On a sunny day, The Beach Club is the place to hang out, or for cool tunes, head to Mamakashaka and Friends. If you feel like shopping, make sure to pop into S.W.A.N.K for the coolest Joburg streetwear and then head two blocks east to 99 Juta and snag a Boys of Soweto sweater. The street gets super busy as the afternoon lengthens, as the crowds extend their partying into the evening at the many entertainment venues.
