If you're feeling a bit self-conscious about being a tourist after visiting MOCAK or Schindler's Factory, visit Bal to restore your street cred. Located literally right behind MOCAK, but with a slyly hidden entrance (take your first left before the museums), this stylish cafe and popular lunch spot was on the first wave of pioneers to pitch their tents in Zabłocie (the once-unseemly, industrial section of Podgórze). What should be an obscure studio space has been turned into a hip hangout with high ceilings and exposed bulbs, wooden tables and white walls covered in rotating art exhibits. Drop in on the weekend for all-day breakfast/brunch with a cocktail, or before 11:30 for big breakfast sets on weekdays, after which the local working crowd comes in to scarf up the daily lunch specials; bagels, sandwiches, pasta, quiche, great coffee and cocktails fill out the menu. Essentially the antithesis of everything in the Old Town, with Bal Kraków’s young creatives are marking their territory. Find it and find out.
